Nearly 99% of the time you have asked yourself whether your decision is right or not.
How many times have you turned your back on an issue, turned a "blind eye" to something that you know should be addressed?
How many times have you stood by while knowing that something is happening and should not be happening, or can be changed for the better?
I ask whether we are right to stand back in silence because we are 'afraid' (not scared, just politely holding back) of facing up to something which we consider to be bigger, better, more powerful, more authoritative or more 'acceptable' in the public eye.
I said it yesterday as well - we have the right to voice our feelings and our opinions. If we believe in something enough to think it is important,we have the right to voice it aloud. We have the right to stand up against those that we consider to be more powerful or stronger than us. In fact, we have a duty to do so.
Our world in southern Africa is facing a multitude of pressures on its wildlife conservation. There are many (many, many actually) who are working flat-out to help and try to stem this present onslaught. I am just saying that we, the majority - the silent majority actually - (and I include myself in that) have got to stand up and say to our 'leaders' "enough is enough". We are a voice, we are a power and we have to be heard and we have to have action taken positively to stop or intervene in the slaughter of animals and the loss of land - both to humankind and animal.
My concern lies with animals. Rhino, elephant all the way down to the smallest creature is being poached illegally by people who simply do not understand, or wish to learn, the impact in the future of their actions today.
I abhor the actions of officials who don't have an empathy to see the real circumstances in which the society around them lives. Education is better than slaughter. But once something is killed, it is dead. DEAD. Gone. We cannot sit around and pontificate about whether it is right, wrong or justifiable - we have to act on the words that we have spoken, of the goals and principles we have set. That unfortunately applies to governments and their organisations as well. You cannot say things and then fail to see that they are carried out by your representatives. It is NOT up to the private individual to correct the faults of government all the time..the citizens of a country have given their government the mandate by their support, they have given and continue to give the government the support financially by taxes et al.
Support the organisations in your community and your country who are striving to help the poor, the underprivileged, animal welfare. But do it knowing that you have the right and the duty to speak out against officials and official organisations who do not do so. As a human on this little orb, it is in fact our duty to do so.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-3729506795496815192011-11-18T13:29:00.000-08:002011-11-18T14:05:12.611-08:00don'tDon't ever try to type and post something when you can't see the key board properly!
I have just lost a deep, emotional comment for here and I am not going to re-do it now. Suffice it to say that we have to really look into ourselves to know and appreciate what and who we are.
Your daily "things" which do not do much for you as an individual (strength and growth wise) are ok but they are NOT that important. Too often we let them be exactly that- too important- and we start to mold ourselves into a personality which is not us.
All over, for years, we have heard that we should "love yourself" and then you will be better off. Well, it is true. But it's a hard lesson to learn. 'Cos I reckon that's got to be one of the hardest - to love yourself. You can "believe" in yourself, you can know that you are doing ok and so on. But love yourself? We know that we have far too many faults in ourselves that we have to address before we can love ourselves!
Wrong. Loving yourself is actually just coming to terms with all that you are - what you have done and want to do - and then learning that probably, we are not only individuals but have to have the strength to be with others around us. Any bit of sharing and compassion, empathy or daring that we show, makes us understand "ourself" better. At the same time it gives us more confidence that we can partake in this thing called life and society knowing that the bit we have just done has benefited "ourself". Honesty to others and yourself is a big part. Never let yourself down nor do anything which will lower the standards you have set for yourself. Never be too harsh to judge others who might not have that ability yet.

Its hard and I know that there must be millions of people that never look into their lives anywhere like this. True love, I believe, is an understanding, a feeling followed by actions, which then turns your REAL life into happiness, comfort and a prosperity for those who are with you. Thereby you gain and are more fulfilled - and so are those around you, because your calmness does reach them and they benefit from that.

If we, individually, are not doing "bad things", then we are helping each other. If you have something to say about the people and the world around you, then say it. But not in such a manner that it is not heard by the world or the people affected.

Later ......

xToff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-42533395862262916642011-07-08T17:47:00.000-07:002011-07-08T17:54:06.783-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyYfmkIBUbpQGsr-opcJV9sUEMgBpL659ZZM3ZLSP94Rnl6ZHRyU4hce8-1OPLPdxRPMfudrKOoApe92OkLLjGFODul6qJ29eihufML0uYhGEBd3NaShfHt0BZ3M-lMN6qYVcZL51NvTa1/s320/chobe+river+26+sept+09+%252824%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627149088413855474" />Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-36454822992648743152011-07-08T17:08:00.000-07:002011-07-08T17:34:10.908-07:00AlertI am awake, but I am tired; I close my eyes but not my mind; I live for now yet have lived for years; I eat to stay alive and alive I am.
That's true for most wildlife - a bird, a tortoise, an elephant and an impala. Right across the board. What sometimes we humans perceive as challenges in our lives, they live with each day and night. We have come a long way, ourselves, in our evolution, since the times when we survived like that. Lucky us...
Our 'normal' lives are now so complicated by all the improvements, modernizations, progress and so on, that these basic tenets of life are forgotten by most of us in our day to day trappings. Are we that lucky?
I am privileged (not the only one by any means) to be able to work most of my days in the field, the bush, the veld, Nature surrounds me, I learn from, feel, see and hear it. Most of the time when I am 'out there' I recall times on each safari when I think of the lifestyle I or friends of mine have or have had in the towns, cities where we live. I cannot and will not put it all down..that's silly. But I know that we overdo it..even those of us who slow it all down to savour the nature, or peace and quiet we can find near us in the civilized world.
I like to be amongst the animals and nature, to share some of their sanctuary as well as their concerns. Somehow, when I have my tent and my bed to sleep in, when I have some food in me and some to look forward to tomorrow, I am happy knowing that around me life is as complicated as our bustling cities, yet is lived without our shortcomings. From that alone I can gain some peace.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-53846636678994931822011-06-30T11:42:00.000-07:002011-06-30T11:47:25.373-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheRmFmRTSUJQQhrn6eLXl155G5kMURTGWaDTwTf-Lm-HQtnF3iuafKJTFbpetC02vamE4V7h6b_51ykn9xJWfw6AD619hERAsEYookk9n_RLzzpZAkNDT0XOuPQl2n-WeIEM5LhwQrw6bv/s320/giraffes+30+June+09+%252811%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624086096625744082" />Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-55081793987814154402011-06-30T11:19:00.000-07:002011-06-30T11:39:54.826-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgEtKNapr5hG7Jn25eBdmMtYpauZh1fLEulN-v7TEx3M3vgNOd7NmvYUkdxOB8rYlL8CWil8Q52bbApdYJzbOO4R7tTYQA6Bl5Iu4GZBBv2B_BzCsihmuIhjxXFdykwWW-YHRNhkoyu1Fl/s320/Ele+bull+Nxai4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624084028357639458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxyTDqTPtDoLzNyHftrGN76fRdCS29XsWhQLMMuwH00JOcDLHeW4nRjtSVEK_FcMTNcYkthQVR8LbePFR7AOXoX-m_2c0EL_Gl2wWg-HPjT4UVjhNjUPoDPWfchaH51f6DDgInnAcBwoXz/s320/P1040455.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624083075982066450" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7vCKDQEfGcTVWgDrQ2N8zjn1jQDfbPreDL8HPkmx6-kjfSVmJEC9pea4GvOmdNojqIVJ4kNI75hxfbUsB0Z4m9DHMELO1jM77JayOdn1q0f5TfKkB-XvThWXGQH1SGzj9ueJXFtkQkztv/s320/P1040453.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624082097255282770" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdOiaYO3r284FUUui1Rh8d6qjzmFlnqds61E0juU4HB21Nw8QUmPDGVhswfqS1R7nBIbTmt1N2K4xGkB4bdpLy-suLH7_Y38o4r23HquI0BvjAI5278UQvtYBybBKPloaYYRTlIclNks10/s320/P1040444.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624081156467685746" />Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-13392711684985461512011-06-30T10:29:00.000-07:002011-06-30T11:17:58.325-07:00Giraffes Rule OK! Chobe River RunsWow..just you wait..here comes something you did not expect. I have been on a few safaris recently (? of course) and many many times have I been along the Chobe River section of the Chobe National Park. In this month, with our guests, we have seen more giraffes than I have ever encountered along this stretch of the Park.
Giraffes? They have always been there. Yes of course. But in such numbers that when you drive from the entrance at Sedudu Gate, once you start to encounter them, you do not stop seeing more and more.
"There's a giraffe", goes the shout in the vehicle. But oh no, each time we stopped or drove slowly past, we counted 3 then 5 then 7 and more - up to 14 a time. I honestly reckon that we saw from 240 individuals upwards.
The buffaloes were also getting into full swing - herds and herds and herds. Many scattered individual and small groups, marvelous bulls and plenty of young calves.
Amongst all this 'big' game, we cannot forget that one of the most impervious, dominating and influential characters along the river-front, is the Impala. They never cease..to be there, to glow, to shine and prance, to jump in their magnificent display - high prancing and happy!Survivors and one of our most attractive symbols in the region. So too the Kudu - wow, are they doing well along this section of the Park! Wesaw so many young, so many females in herds and some wonderful mature bulls.
Then there are the elephants. They will never cease to be there and to entertain us. And to teach us. I have a story which I will tell later..about the most fantastic "whispering" experience one could have with these wonderful creatures. I am going to wait for the comments on my Facebook page, my own writings there and those of the people who shared that experience with me.
Believe me..I don't care who is the 'expert' on this..that expert and I have more than something in common then. I believe in what I know and have experienced and that particular encounter merely cemented what is fact and what I have learnt from past experience.
Check out Facebook toff hill and ultimate africa safaris. If you care.
When we give our hearts, our mind and our feelings to nature and are prepared to share that with nature, we are the ones who learn something new. We are NEVER learned.
Hoping to hear your views and experiences too....Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-39457824321245099432011-05-01T13:39:00.001-07:002011-05-01T14:19:32.296-07:00March travels<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbhQXGnFVCNvZ1XKRfnIDYVhghyw_esN2rICl3yMw0w4ZdOvpMVnyCbdxtx1A7fa-Ejm4ing5V1vPyJAS6edaNsCLtNwY8pe8W5FAjfS5fO4u-LkQTRpaVVlCDvB1HddAQeEldLwj9wEth/s320/P1020621.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601860270313781122" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuBsnmj9O-_gHFkMieWj4RVRg34tpcVMOGKa8NSjW4ZwZiZKc8LpC8C_pMbXf5WOUyugwECxVB9z6ZklcS-bpiLArxym_fdWXyGUrbev5uawB87HrfXIPKRD_BzjGIWLHvsu10MVfjCZ6v/s320/T%2526+Dandy+CKGR+Kral.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601859345592883538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ9aRggQC2Uajjcbei0rhPsbKxvqIYjQ2kgXwO-1gTB4QU0XMJ34ULlamYUVqvDR1csnVxTlRrWSQ2B0_JAsnk0F9RJoELlEMC9kxsvxlcxmbP8jGTEB4SwsvXfG6E_WgoTQDNl03RbpOo/s320/P1040767.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601856553649492434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY5rcXz-J4E2l4CbJRr1gx-qTZOUFdxfhyNB9tNSQPsBhkWmUjfntwu_Ekyp4V5ebire9poFvwTQOUuEU685FUNtK62X-mWRqCmAvBsH8TKSbqkrrodGl1xpd9d6HfuPw_tjb6K6f3T074/s320/P1040671.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601856551660483842" />
Between mid-March and mid-April, I traveled with some wonderful people. We were on safari, at first in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve of Botswana and then in the Sankuyo Community area of Santawani, which borders on the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta region.
We spent two weeks in the Kalahari, transversing the central and northern area - a group of five adults and 3 young children. All five of us learnt a lot from the three! They were amazing - captivated, interested, studious, full of fun and laughter and games amongst all the nature and wild animals around them. Genuinely a pleasure to share the time with. I think back fondly to the marvelous safari we had with Bill and Susan Oliver in this place, and wonder at how the Kalahari keeps on delivering the same peace and rewarding experiences to all whom I take there.
Two of my guests were from Belgium. They had traveled with us on a tour during October last year and wished to come back to the Kalahari - and did not waste any time about it either. What lovely, pleasant and happy people.
I am blessed with being able to share my times pout in the bush with such folk. I can barely recall guests who have been with me who have not been a pleasure to share the experiences with.
Marti, my dearest little friend and side-kick, waited patiently in Kasane for some time, but was spoilt enough to be on Ntwala Island at the lodge (Ntwala Lodge, with Kiddy for just over two weeks of this time. He does real well as the lodge dog and mascot! Loves 'meet and greet" and going out to the jetty when the guests arrive or leave. He is unobtrusive in between and very polite! His stay was earned by hunting rats - one of his absolute favourite past-times! Now he has his dad back with him (which is where I belong, of course!), he is happily sprawled on the couch(es), chairs, bed..all his normal spots. His toy collection is well looked after - he still has several of his tennis balls intact (one from August last year in Kenton)and he is a joy to have with us.
Here are a few pics...I have not had much chance to get out on the Chobe and Zambezi rivers yet and must do so - the rivers are at the fullest now and offer a spectacular day's outing. But work looms - safaris starting in 2 weeks' time and a busy June and July ahead, as well as August, September and October. Great! I love my work.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-69370053555091815422011-02-26T13:52:00.000-08:002011-02-26T15:04:00.878-08:00Phew 2 months...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZV488yKVYlGtVsoPI8Iwn07wCpL2obKmOAlorp-_qaYJgA08xKvmf_PAYVS_zI8v-HdK8ryUwZA1jbiZDpjdVN_n5L7cIP5t9eYqAR4i3vZ3aF48L8n-Ge6MKtbHPEyQmn5pFK6U8XDvq/s320/Dave+P+CKGR+26+MAr+%252824%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578136474801408642" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRIaKBCRq4-_RTTxonWhC5I9uiGSHAelfB1EqXOfCZyninGqMcvpWXsROTftt-XIIEjhtgRQn3jJfUbpgzObCTluV-Ns0LrYnlNy201wrfNdgLT_ThV7rwAtgatS8kfC2D1_hNn2BbbbAt/s320/kalahari+male+lion+%25283%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578135151499762658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMSRa0HKrH5wDbw9hHH7rbGsU3NqgZi5m0Phz6YehKj1f1J2gs_6iPpCewbJji57QNl6I5DIHanxj3n93fGw6uOmMxvwc83JDb_K2YcVBEP3n9_2cLDyjzWmu9cAGs_FfmzFDt0DQdi2Dq/s320/CKGR+Dave+P+28+Mar+%252822%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578132827888065794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCFywuplGfd2WLsYabkX7GGj0lSUyAc3t-faPgAigqWwQseVYCKh8GbDEJpbp1El9rLAkN0-ZnDtmGwUDpRU5IPI6O8jPnpYqylqKVXhRCTMbbQVcGk0AUx9baEq5lYkTetU7OPKlK3XRx/s320/Marty+%2526+Kenton+beach+scenes+%25288%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578127321036431010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKPcO8Z6n-RMot1Yaj7E4tGdPpK6Qh5Le6XodKhcp5PWlqG-xP9Ov4Z49HjsyEA1SO1lM2Owm6wLoswIy1xq1b3nmdwP2muJrki540uQitZZ_YFu_9FU975vIHN_b_BvcTzge_SW9YDXck/s320/chobe+river+26+sept+09+%25286%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578125838060633282" />
You would swear that nothing can keep you from what you have to do and what you know you should do. But that's a lie. 'Cos most of us succumb to that, don't we?(I say this. And I say as well.." I hope..") because I have no exscuses for the times when I didn't do what I should or could have.
That said, how have you been? I have spent two months of this year doing and feeling some of the most amazingly sad and deep, happy and shallow, feelings that I would ever think I should. But I have opened myself to the fact that if I cannot go throught this, then what the heck am I even trying to be. I cannot say that I have the answer for myself, but I can say that I know myself and understand myself a lot - a LOT - more than I have done for a long, long time.
Look at the few pictures I have posted again. I have got some of the most wonderful pictures from the time I spent in the Kalahari with Izaak, Rene, Annekarien and Bianca during December 2010. Stunning stuff. You will not believe unless (or until) you have been there yourself. Then there is Marti - a most faithful,loving dog - but not just that. He is and will be, an inspiration of happiness and simplicity to me - never wake up that you are not happy or ready to smile, and give a kiss and a hug to whom you are with (OK OK! there are exclusions!!:)) and make life a game, never want to argue or fight, just enjoy and live responsibly.
If you have not spent some time in the last 2 months alone, if you have not sat and watched the sunset or the sunrise, again alone within yourself, if you have not sat quietly on a river (or at the sea) and seen the peace around you - and let it include you - and if you haven't found something like this in your week for yourself, where you are, then do it. It is worth the time, believe me.
Sayings like "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" are cliches. There is no substitute - EVER - for what you know and believe in yourself. And most of the time you are right. And if you are wrong, you have the knowledge, inside of you, that you are right to say "I am wrong".Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-33250835719127345232010-12-25T13:35:00.000-08:002010-12-25T13:44:38.866-08:00Christmas 2010Sheesh! It's one week until the new year, and I will only be able to be online again after that..I will be in Savuti and Moremi during this time. Together with friends, rain and mud (I am sure) and a load of good wildlife for entertainment!
HAPPY XMAS AND A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEARToff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-82539798251283183312010-12-25T13:20:00.000-08:002010-12-25T13:33:34.696-08:00Central Kalahari Reserve Dec '10You are going to eat your heart out, I hope! You just gotta be here...and for those of you have been 'here',you will know what I am saying.. I have just spent 5 amazing days with Rene & Annekarien and their friends Izaak and Bianca, in the Deception Valley area of the Central Kalahari Reserve, Botswana. My FAVourite! Green season (rains) has just started and you could not wish for better settings for great game viewing and absolutely GREAT open space and quiet.
I can't say that we beat the times that Susan and Bill (Oliver) spent there with us a couple of years back..but it was very good. In all,45 lions were seen - some of them chose to be not more than 25 metres from our camp site,3 times. They gave us the most amazing shows..because we took the time to stay with them and watch.
We saw cheetah, lazing and hunting! Young Springbok literally being born and unable yet to take their first steps..waiting with them while they mastered this. And one experience of such a young little lamb having to fight for its life (being hunted by cheetah) within the first hour of entering this world. An astounding interraction to be part of.
NO photos yet! I have not had time to upload them today...
There is a safari leaving mid March to the Kalahari again..come on, join me!! And if the dates don't suit you,let me know what does.
This is real rejuvenation of the spirit and mind.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-22590071314154382962010-12-01T10:37:00.000-08:002010-12-01T11:05:10.084-08:00One more sunset...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNDOC3Ft2BLUg3MC5ZbO5cZ4btcqYmVqBkGnGPBJJbCcLTr_WVGwJqPvrnYN4r29780Z8DsR_ikFxXKsDoHGkQxtoChlg-WtBY3lRlOhH0MSMFcWO0sXXmVNWPPe0iuBz-qRIYYylevwbJ/s320/Toff+rapids+April+09.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545791495163448338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivM8lMBIKlwTBzMi1vwZMpzZEuiOE8_dEfvN-ReCg7_uj-4s49GDMAs0pRMEQcg4hYfrPWqjwe6Jbpefbqm0LQwxT1h0_VNJYqqnAiS1Hph-tusu7hQXSj-LOv8uz2JFTUpASXHORBorR4/s320/Kasai+Tigers+Jun+%252710+%25281%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545790207138952946" />
After 2 months near to the junction of the Zambezi river and the Kasai Channel, as well as being mere metres from the Mambova Rapids, I can tell you that I have only fished 3 times. Someone recently said to me: 'That's pretty bad management'. Well,the times out were great. Everyone I know who has been fishing there for (maximum) 5 days during the last two months that I have been there, has caught fish! And lots. And some very nice big Tigers. Well, I am happy to go out and simply enjoy yet another sunset, a peaceful and tranquil time of course. Since I can't remember when,I have drawn an energy from that time of day..as it draws to close and all settles down to wait the coming of the new dawn.

Marti is happy as long as he accompanies me. Fact. He loves watching the lure hanging in the air just before casting, following its flight out over the water..and then waiting to see where it will pop up again. He has learnt to touch and smell live fish, before they are put back in the water to live another day. He has certainly learnt that as much as that cool water looks sooo inviting, you don't go near it. Not if you are a little dog..crocodiles rule that space.

Coming up soon... Silly me.

I remember this sighting, and yes, it was just great! Patience and intuition rewarded for us. The lioness calling softly to her cubs, the cubs responding with tiny, soft 'mews'..and all in the track right with us.

Moremi has some wonderful experiences to offer you. So do many. many places on this planet.

Reviewed 10 Aug 2006 by Sarah Hanney

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?The most memorable experience was seeing six lion cubs suckling two lionesses right next to our safari jeep at dusk which was an amazing and we were very lucky to see thanks to an amazing guide in Moremi (Toff Hill from Delta Rain). There is no comparison to seeing these amazing animals close-up and will absolutely stay with me for the rest of my life. Not to forget however, an elephant choosing our tent to have a midnight snack over whilst we were inside listening to his digestive juices.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?My tips to other travellers is to take very warm clothing. The early morning safari in an open vehicle is freezing - fleeces and definitely a hat or balaclava. Less sun burn than wind burn!
Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-71866714296524611372010-11-28T06:59:00.000-08:002010-11-28T07:33:10.691-08:00Zambezi River, Mambova Rapids.

Islands in Africa - Impalila and Ntwala in the Zambezi, situated at the tip of the Caprivi Strip of Namibia. Tranquil settings and an amazing birdlife. Tiger fishing is good at the moment, too.
Have been at the lodges here assisting with management for two months. Mid December, a safari starts, going to the Central Kalahari and Chobe National Parks. Visit Savuti - you have been there already? - ok, BUT have you been back since the Savuti Channel is flowing? It'sariver, not a stream and the marsh is already flooding. I expect that we will have more and more game remaining there throughout the year, with that the hope that lions, wilddogs, cheetah will also extend their stays in Savuti. It is a beautiful area to visit now, to see the change. Remember, its the first time since 1981 that the river is flowing again.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-61432313313256794042010-09-29T15:56:00.000-07:002010-09-29T16:04:21.293-07:00
Bushmans River, Eastern Cape South Africa. A trip to the park or even the zoo? Well, I don't know about the zoo, but I sure can tell you that I would not be surprised if I went there to see the leopard in its cage...and, wait for this..it wasn't there.
Darned cats! They are superb at hiding. Yet also superb at being totally visible when they want to be seen. Yet another typical cat trait. There is a ginger cat that owns our house - totally. Occupies it, owns it, (forget the landlord) uses it, abuses it, makes a mess, leaves hair wherever for the housekeeper to clean.. Well the list is endless. That Darned Cat. And that applies to the elusive little ones each time we go on safari. Love them. I think, I hope. No, I am sure I do.
So who is the "boss" out there? Of course we do know the answer. Not us. All the cliches are right - we are merely visitors, passer's through. Animals will dictate at times, what we will or won't see. I have tried, mostly, to be honest enough about that. Yes, it takes a good guide to get you there at the right time but it also takes that element which belongs totally to the animal we are hoping to see.
I am not one for the glitz and glamour of turning each corner and finding a 'big one' or a 'special'. Did we miss the ants crossing? Did we miss the dung beetle trying to cross? Did we miss the leaves falling? We need time to savour the world around us and on our safaris we do try and remember that. Not always. But nearly! And remember that every minute that I am out there looking at nothing, I am looking for the cats,and the specials. But I remember what else is around us.
Our last safari had a lovely surprise lion at sunset, a day of seeking out the 'girls' whom we did not see, and a lovely leopard sighting near the end of the tour. Add to that some of the most beautiful impalas; close up, calm and stunning elephants; kudu, sable and roan, warthogs and baboons, birds and birds, buffaloes falling (?) out of the trees (that's surely a cliche) and excellent human company with lovely food in camp to boot. Well, what more is there? Luxury? A, exscuse me for saying this, hair dryer? Yes if you insist..but that is second to the experience of finding out Who is Who on safari.
Enjoy. The first visit across the ditch, this year. (The ditch being the Zambezi River). It is nice to be here again, I have spent so many times here over the last three years that it is strange to not have been here for so long this year. Have seen many friends, and they are all full of welcome - a very typical reaction and response that you will get from people in this region. Thank you all for your hospitality and help, and friendship.

I think that the Mozi (beer) tastes better than it did last year when I was here! At last there are a few trips which will bring me through here over the next few weeks. Time to visit that beautiful spot, Taita Falcon Lodge, on the Batoka Gorge.

Love for nature and the world around us, is something we have to remind ourselves about from time to time. For some of us, the natural world is around us and we see and experience it. Better than only being in a city - I mean IN a CITY, not in a nice suburban area away from the real Concrete Jungle. Those are the folks who need to have a chance to get out into the natural world.
Life should be a balance - for those not out in the nature and for those who are - because I can take the city and the built up world. But I know it is nice to be able to "work" in the bush, in the natural, nature world. And to share that love, and life, with friends and close, loved ones.

And, Man's Best Friend..the dog. Well, Marty sure fills that description. Loyal,waiting, patient always there when I get back from being away. Always happy and always only to pleased to share any moment with me. He is not the only one..many, many of us have such a friend. They are quite amazing companions. Enjoy them.

And now, in the late hours of the evening, I must close my mind to the things that have to be done, to the day ahead and the things not yet done, and merely relax in the knowledge that I, too, am loved. And that I do have people who care about me, in some way. And to find comfort and solace in that knowledge, and happiness.

No pictures today, I don't have the drive connected with those on...so tomorrow or the next day, we get some photos for you again.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-53818912177041902812009-08-06T13:37:00.000-07:002009-08-06T15:04:07.983-07:00What is Time?

The Chobe River, one of my favourite spots here on this bend,to sit and watch the sunset from my boat, always accompanied by Marty the Jack Russell. Although clouds have these stunning formations, how often have you turned back to look at them again, just minutes later, and they have changed? An obvious observation, no great scientific enlightenment in that one. But that is time, all changes with and in time. Nothing in the material universe will stay the same. And we are but material as well,our bodies. And thus we change through life.
I have been watching the progress of my grey haired beard more recently, since the last two years. It seems to be on a mission of catching up for lost time!
It strikes me as difficult to keep aspects of time in place. I know that I have just recently struggled to get understanding on why something which has happened, is gone, done..never actually leaves us. Even when we think that it will no longer bother us, the present has a way of bringing the past back to either remind us of something or to hit us with some unpleasant memory or association. And we don't seem to have immediate control over the effect this has on us.
Time. Along time ago, can still be right here with us now. Memories, recollections, whatever they are called, never leave us.
And we must remember that what we are doing NOW, will be there in our future as a a memory. Why I can even remember when my beard was definitely NOT grey!
I have been on some wonderful safari tours since my last posting, sorry for the abscence, but I do not yet have, nor will I have, internet connection in the bush whilst on safari.
Here are a few photos to remind us that even out there all we see today will not be the same tomorrow. I am often asked whether my tours don't become boring, I am covering the same areas time after time,year after year.
I have never answered "yes"to that, because it is always changing and always something is new or different. Again,Time.
What is that young baboon thinking as he sits there? What is he doing now? Just as we would, I hope he savoured that beautiful moment and has it stored in his memory as a happy, peaceful time. And the trees, Baines Baobabs, have been there for thousands of years, but without memory as we know it. Yet they stand and change with Time. And we, whoever visits there, stand for a time around them and think of the quiet solitude they have endured.
Well, it's time for bed, too. The longer I stay awake, the less timeI have to sleep; and it's time for me to go, and spend some time resting before it's time to get up. Time and again, Time enters into our thoughts consciously, many times in our conversations. It is always there, passing, making what is our lives. Making my beard grow more grey!
Enjoy your time here (reading my page), and then go on to enjoy it whereever you might be from this moment on.

Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8246293977738630707.post-23306184127356933802009-07-12T00:04:00.000-07:002009-07-12T00:42:18.456-07:00Days of Learning

Beautiful coastline, Eastern Cape South Africa.

Giraffe and leopard in the Chobe National Park.

It was time to gather the force of my one sibling and share some time together! We had given this a bash two days ago, to find that she had come down with the worst flu you could wish for; and our visit together turned into an evening of medicine and remedies, no supper together and so on. So Saturday was sunny and seemed perfect. We managed a quick lunch together at a nice outdoor pub/restaurant, soaking up the warm sun..funny, how hot the sun is in winter when you sit in it with long sleeves or a sweater on!!

I am hoping today to catch up maybe on a bit more time together before I return to work in the Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve next week.

I had the pleasure of spending time also with new friends, young folk who I am getting to know and appreciate. Being a part of their world for this short time has also been eye-opening and a learning for me. One where I have enjoyed what I have done and learnt.

And amongst this, still time to be in touch with (old) friends and share experiences and plans together, to exchange thoughts and feelings with folk through some correspondence. And today, it's also time to make contact and catch up on the news with family I have not spoken to for far too many months.

So, Sunday it is..and a busy schedule ahead. The subject line is a bit all-encompassing, but anyway. Suffice it to say I am only going to comment on its immediate effect on me and some close friends in the last week! Temperatures in Johannesburg region get pretty low in winter and for folk like us coming from the northern Botswana, mild climate, well..I never seem prepared for it. And I never get sick where I live - ok maybe a day now and again over a couple of years. I consider I have a system pretty well able to tackle anything the outdoors, dust, people, animals etc can throw at me. It seems to work. But not in Johannesburg. Man, someone had a cough and flu and I said don't worry it won't get to me. Yeah, right. Here I am sick and miserable. Nasty bugs they got here. They ain't friendly!There are another 3 around me going through various stages of being sick. No wonder the chemists and medical profession thrives so well down here!

No exscuses. I am going to post a photo I took of the moon in the early morning, and hope it looks as good as it did in real life.

One thing for someone like me who comes from such a small town with very few amenities, in a place like Johannesburg, Pretoria, or whichever city we might be in, we can look forward to a huge selection of good restaurants, bars and shops to entertain us! It's easy, for a while, to not get bored and to enjoy the lifestyle for a while. For a while. Then it's good to be able to get away from it again, not having to live in the bigger cities full-time. Even a break of a few days out, is good.

Friends, family, companions. They make the difference. They are always above material issues such as city life,work, stress, entertainment and so on. Relationships with people are above these things, and will always be more rewarding.Toff Hillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302626706499808095noreply@blogger.com0
